DESCRIPTION:The Tribal Coalition Board Institute is a 2-day interactive institute providing Tribal Coalition board members with best practices in nonprofit governance\, understanding the broader landscape of their position and Tribal Coalition\, as well as equipping them to engage effectively with community partners. \nDate: July 13-14\, 2026 (travel dates will be July 12 & 15)\n\nLocation: National Advocacy Center\, 1620 Pendleton St\, Columbia\, SC 29201\n\nRegistration: Registration is closed | Two board members from each Tribal Coalition are invited to attend this training. | Registration closed on June 12\, 2026. | After registering\, the National Advocacy Center will be sending a confirmation to the board member registrant with more information.\n\nHotel: Attendees who were confirmed registered were sent an email from the National Advocacy Center with group code/password and instructions on how to book their hotel that is located inside the training center. To note: The National Advocacy Center is a federal training facility and cannot accommodate family members. If traveling with a guest\, please reserve offsite lodging. Please email ta@atcev.org if you need assistance. \n\nAgenda: At-a-glance agenda\n\nAdditional Information:\n\nIf you are driving to the NAC\, you can buy parking passes at the NAC hotel front desk for $5 per day.\nThe National Advocacy Center is a federal training facility and cannot accommodate family members. If traveling with a guest\, please reserve offsite lodging.\nBreakfast and lunch are included in the cost of your hotel in the NAC dining room. If you are staying offsite\, meals can be purchased at the dining room.\nThe NAC is a non-smoking facility. There is a place outside where smoking is permitted.\n\nMorty’s Moosehead Lounge is open nightly at 5pm on the 3rd floor of the NAC\, where you can buy drinks and light meals.\n\nA free evening shuttle runs to and from popular restaurant districts in Columbia. You can find a shuttle schedule at the hotel front desk.\nVisitors must be entered in our Visitor Management System before arriving.  If you are expecting a visitor\, please let us know. No overnight visitors are allowed.\nYour bags are subject to screening by law enforcement when you arrive at the NAC.\nThe NICTI will provide reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities. Nonprofits have a close-up view of community needs and can and should take advantage of their right to influence law and policy. After this workshop\, you will have a clear understanding of what advocacy activities your 501(c)(3) can engage in\, what communications count as lobbying\, and how to maximize your non-lobbying advocacy. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nHow federal tax law permits lobbying for charities and how lobbying is defined;\nOne easy step most charities can take to maximize the amount they’re allowed to spend on lobbying;\nYearly lobbying limits for charities;\nTips for taking advantage of the narrow definitions of lobbying – which will help charities make the most of their lobbying limit; and\nHow to apply these rules to ballot measure activities.
